description abstractA solution is presented for stress, strain and temperature rise in a long rod subject to axial impact by a small rigid mass. The rod material is described by a bilinear thermoviscoplastic constitutive model. The rod response is assumed to be adiabatic, so that inelastic work is completely converted into heat. The general solution is derived using Laplace transforms, and a numerical inversion technique is formulated. Calculations are presented in a case typical of commercially pure titanium. It is hoped that this solution will serve as a “benchmark” for validating general purpose impact codes such as EPIC-II.
