description abstractThis paper describes the design of an on-line tool wear sensor for straight turning operations, which will lead to the realization of adaptive control for optimization (ACO). Tool wear is detected by measuring the change in distance between tool holder and work surface using a stylus which is mounted on the tool holder. The stylus movement is sensed by a displacement transducer. The experimental results indicate that the sensor is capable of measuring tool wear with satisfactory accuracy.
