Abstract: Because many areas of favorable locations for wind turbines coincide with high thunderstorm activity, a lightning protection system for wind turbines is essential to prevent losses due to strikes. Damage can occur to blades, bearings, mechanical linkages, electrical equipment, power interconnections, and electronics. This paper discusses how often a wind turbine may receive a strike, what damages can be expected, and how protection can be provided.
