The Effect of Time and Temperature on Residual Stresses in Austenitic Welds

Abstract: The influence of heat treatment, upon residual stresses in AISI 316-type welds, is studied by subjecting a number of highly restrained weldments to various heat treatment cycles. Measurements of residual stresses, made before and after heat treatment, are related to uniaxial data by means of the Larson-Miller parameter, and the mechanism of stress relaxation in austenitic welds is contrasted with that occurring in ferritic welds.
