Stress Sources and Critical Stress Combinations for Splined Shaft

Abstract: It is shown that there are three critical combinations of loads for a splined shaft tooth. For each combination, the possibility exists that three types of cracks may occur: transverse, inclined, and longitudinal. They are studied in this paper. As distinct from known approaches, when two stress factors are assumed to cause splined shaft fracture, the author considers five stress factors: shearing torsion stress, stress caused by contact force from torsion, normal bending stress, shearing bending stress, stress caused by contact force from bending.
