description abstractA method for determining the uncertainty in the location of a cross-correlation peak is derived and two examples are examined. When a cross-correlation peak location is used in transit time flowmeters as a measurement technique for fluid-flow velocity, turbulence in the fluid increases the peak location uncertainty. This effect is examined for two models of turbulence. Also examined is the bias or shift in the peak location due to time response or filter mismatch.
