Abstract: Synthetic fuel projects will require very large oxygen facilities. This paper examines the issues that must be resolved in the design of these facilities. It surveys the major items of equipment, and proposes criteria for train-size selection. Data on energy efficiency and capital investment are presented, as functions of train size. Field construction problems, shipping constraints, and equipment availability are considered. Compression alternatives for high pressure oxygen, system reliability, and process computer control are discussed in detail. The paper concludes that only a modest extrapolation of present experience will be required to build these massive facilities.
