Abstract: A design philosophy for pile foundations in frozen soils is presented whereby seven different pile types may be used in different frozen subsoil conditions. The mechanics of frozen ground as well as of geotechnical engineering are emphasized to select a particular pile type. Various factors governing the pile-load capacity are analyzed to determine the worst design conditions which include the evaluations of summer and winter loadings.
