Abstract: The start from rest of a thin cylindrical body with elliptic cross section in a viscous incompressible fluid is studied numerically for various acceleration models. Force and moment coefficients are computed. The role of the starting vortices behind the leading and trailing edges in the generation of lift is investigated.
