Abstract: A general introduction to Section VIII, Division 1, primarily from the viewpoint of the designer, is presented. The organization of the different sections of the Code are explained, and the requirements of the various Subsections of the Code are outlined—stressing those portions which are frequently misinterpreted or subject to dispute.
