Abstract: A semi-empirical, dynamic model for investigating the fluid forces induced on a bluff cylinder by vortex shedding is developed using random vibration theory. The model includes both spanwise correlation effects and the amplitude dependence of the correlated vortex forces. Model parameters are determined by experimental data. The results are then applied to determine the forces exerted on elastic cylinders at resonance with vortex shedding. The predictions are in good agreement with experimental data.
