Abstract: Rigorous principles are derived for designing hydraulic cylinders optimizing a wide range of objective functions and stress constraints. Monotonicity and dominance are illustrated as general principles useful for identifying constraints critical at an optimum and simplifying design procedures. Optimal cylinder designs are shown to be of two types easy to compute. Constraint indicators are introduced to handle combinatorial aspects.
