    Comparative Study of Two Semicontinuous Models for Wire Strand Analysis

    Abstract: A study is done to compare two models (that of Hobbs and Raoof from 1982, and that of Jolicoeur and Cardou from 1996) that use a semicontinuous approach to predict the behavior of multilayered wire strands under axial and bending loads. Theoretical differences and similarities between the two models are highlighted. Static stiffness results are obtained for a seven-wire steel strand and for a multilayered electric overhead conductor. For stiffness in tension and torsion, both models appear quite equivalent but, for bending stiffness, the Jolicoeur and Cardou model agrees better with more classical models and with published experimental results. Recommendations are given to improve predictions from both models.
