Managing Civil Engineering Innovation: An Interview

Abstract

This interview of Lockwood by Hensey addresses an unusual case of civil engineering innovation involving the research and development for a patented concrete arch‐box shape (CON/SPAN) that extends the economy of culverts to greater clear spans than presently available culverts. The interviewee, Bill Lockwood, is founder of a growing consulting engineering firm and developer of CON/SPAN. The interview explores the process of his development of this patented system and the management of this innovation from idea to implementation in an increasingly important area of civil engineering and construction.
