What Do You Look for in a New Engineer?

Source: Journal of Management in Engineering:;1985:;Volume ( 001 ):;issue: 001
    Author:
    Glenn E. Futrell
    DOI: 10.1061/(ASCE)9742-597X(1985)1:1(20)
Publisher: American Society of Civil Engineers
Abstract: The author finds that certain criteria are most helpful in selecting new engineering personnel. Generally, these criteria stress good “people‐relating” skills over mere academic achievement. An applicant's education and technical background should be well‐rounded and indicate an ability to grow and learn. A personal work ethic can be gleaned from an applicant's home and pre‐college environment, while the personal interview is a good indicator of personality interactions. Communications and social skills are necessary to foster good relations with clients as well as other employees. A demonstrated positive attitude and a can‐do approach will also be helpful to the company. The author finds that pre‐employment values are likely to be carried into the market place.
