Participation in Leadership Training in Government Relations

Abstract

The American Society of Civil Engineers and the National Society of Professional Engineers collaborate to bring attention to engineering issues at the federal government level in the ASCE program formally named “Leadership Training in Government Relations.” ASCE and NSPE members participate in this two-day program by traveling to Washington DC, attending workshops and talks, and then meeting with government officials. Increased governmental involvement by engineers has been a goal of many engineering societies as well as individual engineers for many years. This paper describes the experiences of the March 2005 Leadership Training in Government Relations by a first-time participant. The considerations made prior to deciding to attend the program are explained as well as a description of the events that comprised the program.
