Abstract: It is argued that the separation between design and construction leads in many cases to designs that are unduly conservative. The author recounts her experiences in seeking to revise plans on projects before construction began. The resistance she encountered, some of it tinged with sexual stereotyping, is described, as is the satisfaction that comes in devising creative engineering solutions.
