Abstract: Mean cell residence time or MCRT has emerged as the leading design and operation parameter for suspended growth wastewater treatment processes. The commonly used MCRT formula has never been shown to represent the time the microorganisms spend in the system. In this technical note, a generalized formula is established for the microbial residence time and shown, under appropriate assumptions, to be equivalent to the formula currently used.
