description abstractNominated for a 1997 ASCE Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award, the $570 million Newark International Airport Redevelopment Project was among a select group of finalists. As a major public-sector airport improvement project that overcame a number of management, contracting, and technical challenges to deliver the completed construction within a very ambitious schedule, it merits discussion. This article highlights the unique structural design and construction features that played a part in the success of the overall project. The basic elements were a fully automated, 2-mi-long, on-airport monorail system, a new international terminal constructed on an active airport apron, and parking and roadway access improvements.
