| description abstract | The nearshore seabed of the Alaskan Beaufort Sea is annually disrupted and modified by ice keels. Intense gouging of the nearshore seabed is associated with ice keels driven by forces amassed from the encompassing ice pack. A study of ice gouging in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea revealed a strong linear relationship between the log of number of gouges versus maximum gouge depth for different water depth ranges. The maximum number of gouges was found in the 20–30 m water-depth range. These ice-gouge statistics are important to the pipeline engineers involved in the design and burial of Arctic offshore pipelines. | |
