Abstract: A series of triaxial compression tests with volume change measurements are performed with the objective of investigating the behavior mechanisms controlling the volume change during deformation. The volume changes are monitored using the writer's testing technique for automatic measurement of volume change of frozen specimens. Specimens tested without rubber membranes, using kerosene as a coolant, transparent medium, and confining liquid, permit an explanation and visual observations for the behavior of the frozen specimens during deformation in shear. Detailed descriptions of the testing procedure are given. The research output presented provides first‐time explanations for the mechanisms controlling the volume change behavior of frozen soils during shear.
