Abstract: Abstract. This study explores the evolution of research on smart mobility solutions and urban transport sustainability in South Africa from 1999 to 2025. Using a bibliometric approach, it maps publication trends, identifies influential authors and institutions, and uncovers key themes and research gaps. A search of the Scopus database using relevant keywords yielded 1285 English-language documents across selected disciplines. Analysis was conducted using Biblioshiny in R, enabling a detailed examination of collaboration networks, citation impact, and thematic structures. The findings show a sharp increase in publications after 2019, significant international co-authorship, and strong institutional contributions led by the University of Johannesburg. Two dominant research clusters emerged: one focused on sustainability and energy transitions, and the other on smart cities, governance, and urban planning. These patterns reflect growing academic engagement with South Africa's transport challenges, though output remains concentrated in a small group of institutions. The analysis also highlights areas where more applied and context-specific work is needed, particularly around informal transport, digital integration, and policy implementation. The trends point to opportunities for stronger regional collaboration, deeper engagement with climate policy, and broader participation across South African institutions. By clarifying the field's trajectory and identifying emerging research spaces, the study offers an evidence base to inform future research agendas and support integrated urban transport planning. As the first longitudinal bibliometric review of this topic in South Africa, it provides original insights into how the field has developed and where meaningful contributions can be directed.
