Abstract: Abstract. This article reviews recent literature on the design and development of information assurance (IA) for the internet of things. The review focuses on recent research on the integration of information assurance into IoT design and development, in order to address the increasing volume and integration of IoT in recent years. Results of the review are summarized, and gaps in current IoT engineering practice are highlighted and include the process and tools needed to integrate information assurance. The results of the review are presented in tables where the strengths and weaknesses of each publication, including its relevance to information assurance and design and development, are noted with comments. Given the increasing integration of IoT systems across multiple sectors, common approach to assuring their interactions is needed. This begins with summarizing the basics of information assurance, IoT, and design and development practice and concludes with a review of several use cases in transportation, healthcare, and sports IoT. A summary of information assurance specific needs for several IoT use cases is provided in the conclusion. These needs can vary from prioritization of IA characteristics to the need for additional IA characteristics. This guidance will help IoT developers in tailoring their approach to information assurance.
