Abstract: Abstract. This report reviews the tribological and tribocorrosion performance of steels that are case-hardened via boriding, chromizing, carburizing, nitriding, nitrocarburizing, and carbonitriding. Case-hardening is commonly used to improve the hardness, impact durability, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance of steel alloys and has been successfully applied in various industries, providing a cost-effective, high-throughput solution for applications involving contact and sliding interfaces in complex service environments. This article summarizes the literature results of the wear and friction behavior of common case-hardening methods for steel alloys under various conditions, including corrosive environments. Special attention is given to the influences of case-hardening process parameters and alloy composition on tribological performance. By discussing key findings from the literature, this review provides insights into optimizing case-hardening processes for improving the tribological and tribocorrosion performance of steel alloys.
