    Abstract: The inadequacies in applying the ?ratio? and ?slope? methods to the interpretation of lidar return signals from inhomogeneous atmospheric dispersions in terms of the attenuation coefficient and atmospheric visibility are discussed, as is the general single-wavelength lidar interpretation problem.
