Abstract: A procedure has been developed to determine the height of a dropsonde without the use of a pressure sensor. The constant drag characteristic of the dropsonde parachute and the constancy of the tropical atmosphere are used for the computation. For the determination of the time-height relationship we need to know only the initial height and the total time of fall. The concept has been successfully tested during the prototype test flights of the Carrier Balloon System for FGGE.
