Abstract: Satellite-observed cloud signatures associated with a large sample of mature and decaying depressions over middle and high southern latitudes are described in terms of a revision of an earlier classification Associated model anomaly patterns of surface pressure and upper geopotential are obtained, and sequential behavior patterns described. Some evidence is found for higher frequencies of particular signatures in regions to the cast of preferred locations of long-wave ridges.
