Abstract: Intermittent release of contaminated buoyant gases is considered as a means of reducing pollution of surface air. A model is proposed for large instantaneous point sources which predicts the height of rise to be greater than obtained by release from a conventional stack as a continuous source. Further, the model predicts that there should be no appreciable transfer of contaminated gases from the rising cloud to the environmental air below the final height of rise. The initial conditions called for in the model are shown to be feasible for large-scale industrial sources of atmospheric pollution.
