    Areal Hail Frequency

    Abstract: A dense network of hail observers has been established in the Pretoria-Johannesburg area of the Transvaal, South Africa, permitting an investigation of the relationship between hail frequency and observational area. Three years of data have shown that hail has fallen, on the average, on 79 days per year within an area of several hundred square miles where the point frequency is five. Within this area hailstone diameters have exceeded 3 cm, on the average, on five days per year. Relationships between hail frequency and observational area were also derived theoretically.
