An Approach to the Classification of Meteorological Satellite Data

Abstract

A system is presented for classifying the meteorological and geophysical features observed in meteorological satellite photographs and photofacsimiles. The classification scheme was designed as part of a computerized system for data cataloging, storage, and retrieval. A four-level logical-tree classification is used because it satisfies the constraints established by the computer, its program, and the rest of the system. It also provides a means of keeping the classifications relatively objective and descriptive at the higher levels. The classifications become more subjective and interpretative as one moves down the logical-tree to the lowest level. The classifications scheme includes revisions and refinements based on tests which utilized Nimbus I data, and is presently being used to classify Nimbus II data.
