    Abstract: The relationship between wind and pressure in the equatorial zone of a barotropic, nondivergent atmosphere is examined. Cyclostrophic effects prove to be of major importance. The results indicate that it is extremely difficult to devise pictorial models of the wind-pressure relationship near the equator. The impact of this conclusion upon operational low-latitude analysis by both subjective and machine methods is discussed.
