SUMMER TEMPERATURES IN THE UNITED STATES

Abstract: Percentage frequencies of hourly temperatures above certain values from 40° to 110° F., by 5° intervals, are presented for 102 places in the United States in summer (June-July-August). The frequencies are based on hourly readings, generally at airways weather stations, during five years 1935?1939. Since average summer temperatures during this period were somewhat warmer than long-term ?normals,? the resulting tabulation is considered applicable to a ?typical warm summer? such that only about 15 summers per century would be warmer. The percentages are presented in a table, and those for temperatures above 85° (30° C. or higher) are shown on a map to indicate the regions where refrigerated storage is desirable for chocolate candy, which turns white (?graying? or ?blooming?) as soon as its temperature exceeds 85°.
