Abstract: Unique data obtained from a regular aircraft sounding network that operated in the Soviet Union from 1957 through 1963 were used to estimate the potential accuracy of the cirrus cloud cover climatology based on routine ground-based weather observations. It was found that at least over the former USSR territory the accuracy of such a technique is better than 10%.
