Abstract: A formulation of Sverdrup dynamics is presented based on a reduced-gravity model in place of the standard approach using the vorticity equation. The integral conservation law of momentum is used to investigate solutions that may include discontinuities. A surfacing line is interpreted as a ?shock front? across which the jump condition derived from this conservation law is satisfied.
