Abstract: A new model is derived for the propagation of surface waves across a shearing current, which is applicable when the wavelength is comparable to the lateral length scale over which the current changes. When applied to wave propagation across a jet-type current, this model predicts a pronounced minimum in the reflection coefficient when the water depth is comparable with the wavelength.
