Abstract: The growth and diversification of the atmospheric sciences has produced a fourfold increase in the volume of the primary journals of the American Meteorological Society during the past decade. The history of this growth and the editorial and review procedures of the Society's journals are reviewed as background for future changes necessary to keep the journals healthy and manageable.
