Abstract: Recent experiments on the sublimation of single crystals of ice in an atmosphere of air indicate that the sublimation rate is diffusion limited and initially solid prismatic crystals evolve into time-independent shapes similar to confocal ellipses rotated about their major or minor axis (prolate or oblate spheroids). Step formation at crystal edges and vapor diffusion easily explain these observations.
