Abstract: The Navier Stokes equation for an isolated axisymmetric viscous vortex is applied to determine the peak wind speeds in vortices leeward of the Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Madeira islands which are shown in TIROS and Gemini photographs of the region. The estimates of the wind speeds range from 2.6 to 6 m sec?1 (5?12 kt) for the clearly discernible vortices.
