Abstract: A stochastic model for the estimation of soil moisture distribution is derived. The series of daily precipitation amounts is described as a chain-dependent process and the surface water balance equation is simplified so that the probability distribution of soil moisture can be expressed by means of a recurrence formula. A similar equation is deduced for the expected values. The model is illustrated by a numerical example.
