Abstract: One method for increasing the capacity at a signalized intersection is to provide an additional through lane on the approaches to and beyond the intersection. If an additional lane is provided, the question arises as to how far to extend the lane beyond the intersection. The current design procedure, and the theoretical and practical considerations relative to the problem are considered, and an example is presented.
