    Abstract: The historical background of the development of inertial survey systems and the basic principles of inertial navigation systems are presented. Inertial survey systems and their operation are described. Some of the operational results in the use of inertial survey systems and the accuracy of inertial positioning systems are examined. Recent work accomplished at the U.S. Army Engineer Topographic Laboratories is also described.
