Abstract: A survey questionnaire was initiated by the American Society of Civil Engineers Executive Committee of the Surveying and Mapping (SU) Division and sent to 4,000 of its members (December, 1981). The purpose of this questionnaire was to develop a profile of the members' interests and to evaluate suggested recommendations for the development and improvement of the (SU) Division. Some highlights of the results are as follows: (1) Seventy percent of these respondents are members of the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping; (2) 80% are members of their local section; (3) most of the respondents have never served on an administrative or technical committee; (4) the questionnaire also provided a means for soliciting new reviewers for the Surveying Engineering Journal; (5) attendance at the local or national conventions seems to be equally divided among those attending one per year, one every five years, and those who have never attended. However, despite those results, the majority of respondents believe that the conventions, and the available short courses and continuing education, are adequate.
