Abstract: This paper provides the design engineer with applicable information on the seismic behavior of reinforced‐concrete, slender coupled wall systems and its constitutive elements (i.e., coupling beams and structural walls). A review of available experimental information is presented. Significant design parameters as well as research needs are identified. It is concluded that a reasonable balance must be maintained between the stiffnesses, strengths, and available rotational ductilities of walls and coupling elements. Thus, the overall response of tall buildings resisting severe lateral loads through coupled walls is that of a ductileand‐tough‐beam strong‐wall system. The coupling elements must be the major suppliers of hysteretic damping and the walls the major suppliers of lateral stiffness and strength. The importance of proper anchorage of the flexural steel and confinement reinforcement is emphasized. Design recommendations on the ultimate design of structural walls and coupling elements are presented.
