Abstract: The fatigue behavior of weathered welded specimens of weathering steel (JIS SMA50) and structural steel (SM50) was investigated. Sixty‐six (66) stiffener specimens and 62 gusset specimens were tested under constant amplitude stress cycle after 2 and 4 yr of atmospheric exposure without paint. The 2‐yr and 4‐yr weathered specimens showed no reduction of fatigue life when compared with nonweathered specimens. An additional 10 stiffener specimens were cut from web of an actually used weathering steel bridge. They were weathered for about 5.5 yr, and showed fatigue behavior equivalent to that of the 4‐yr weathered stiffener specimens.
