Abstract: Alternate depths and sequent depths are calculated by solving the specific energy and specific force equations, respectively. The specific energy and specific force equations result in fifth degree polynomial equations for trapezoidal cross sections. A methodology is developed for simultaneous determination of the alternate depths and/or sequent depths. The methodology uses solutions of quadratic and third-order polynomial equations to identify the two flow depths.
