Abstract: In this paper, a three-point (TP) method for computing cut and fill volumes for triangular and rectangular grids is developed. In comparison to the summation method and the four-point (FP) method, its advantages are: it is applicable to a triangular grid for which no volume estimation method is available; it is applicable to a rectangular grid and therefore allows unequal intervals to be used in establishing the land grading grid; and it provides more accurate estimates of cut and fill volumes and land grading design parameters. Since the TP method is more accurate than the FP method and can be easily implemented in existing land-grading design models, it is recommended for us even when the ground surface within the square grid is a plane.
