Abstract: Scour downstream of a vertical gate develops slowly. Therefore, for a river in which peak flows are of short duration, the time history of scour development is of major importance. The channel scours created by the flow of water under, over, and simultaneously under and over a vertical gate are investigated with a hydraulic model. Although the scour is less, more water can be discharged when there is simultaneously flow under and over the vertical gate compared with the cases when flow is only under or over the gate. Various relationships characterizing the scour phenomenon are found on the basis of experimental results.
