    Mechanical Properties of Cast Carbon Steel in Heavy Sections

    Abstract: An extensive investigation of the mechanical properties of cast ASTM A216 steel WCB and WCC grades, as functions of composition, heat treatment and casting thickness is reported. Castings in section thicknesses ranging from 2 1/2 in. to 10 in. were produced from twenty-two commercial size heats by five different foundries. Tensile, Charpy-V-notch and metallographic results are discussed. The overall conclusion is that by exercising control over composition and heat treatment, cast carbon steel conforming to the requirements of ASTM A216 Grades WCB and WCC when tested at the quarter thickness point in well-fed sections up to 10 in. thick can be expected to meet the requirements of these specifications and those of Section III of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
