    Abstract: Seventeen numerical optimization methods are compared by plotting their convergence characteristics when applied to design problems and test functions. Several ranking schemes are used to determine the most general, efficient, inexpensive, and convenient methods. Conclusions are presented in the form of a selection guide intended for general use.
