Abstract: There may be certain points on a gear tooth surface which contact twice with its mating gear tooth surface. This phenomenon is called “secondary action” and has been indicated relating to several kinds of worm gearings [1, 2, 3 ]. This secondary action may play an important role in skew gears, especially in worm gears. But its character has been scarcely investigated. The authors tried to reveal the general character of the secondary action and got some interesting results. In this paper, the authors lay emphasis on the basic character of the secondary action and omit the procedure of the numerical works.
